What is structured data, and why home-services businesses need it

What is structured data?

Structured data is machine-readable code added to a web page that describes its content — your business, your services, your reviews — in a vocabulary search engines and AI assistants already understand. Instead of guessing from your prose, they read the facts directly. On the web that vocabulary is schema.org, and the format Google recommends is JSON-LD.

Think of it as a fact sheet written for machines: your name, address, phone, hours, service area, the services you offer, and the credentials that prove you're legitimate — all labeled so there's no ambiguity.

Why does it matter for a contractor?

Two audiences now decide whether you get the job, and neither reads your website like a human:

  • Search engines use structured data to understand and trust your business, and to show rich results — star ratings, service lists, and the local pack.
  • AI assistants — Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini — answer questions by pulling from structured, trusted sources. If your identity is clear and consistent, they can name you. If it isn't, they name a competitor.

For home-services businesses the stakes are local and immediate: "roofer near me," "emergency plumber," "who installs metal roofs in my area." Those answers increasingly come from machines reading structured data, not from a human scrolling ten blue links.

What does good structured data include?

A complete graph for a contractor covers far more than a name and phone number. It spans your organization identity, each location, your full service area, your services and offers, reviews, credentials and licenses, and the actions a customer can take — like booking or requesting a quote. hellojade maps this across 25 coverage categories, so nothing that builds trust is left unsaid.

How do you know it's correct?

Structured data only helps if it's valid. Broken or out-of-range markup is ignored — or worse, mistrusted. Every graph should pass schema.org's validator with zero errors and be checked against Google's rich-result requirements before it ships. That's the standard hellojade holds its own site to, and the one it builds for every client.

The takeaway

Structured data is no longer optional plumbing — it's how you get found and recommended in a search landscape run by machines. Get it complete, keep it consistent, and validate it. That's the difference between being the answer and being invisible.
