Featured snippets vs. rich results vs. AI Overviews: what's the difference?
Why the difference matters
“Getting to the top of Google” now means three separate things, each earned differently. Confusing them is the most common SEO mistake — because the tactic that wins one does nothing for another. Here's the plain-English version.
What is a featured snippet?
A featured snippet is the answer box at the very top of results — a paragraph, list, or table lifted directly from a page. It is content-extracted: no code or markup triggers it. You win it by answering a question clearly, in the format Google already shows, on a page that already ranks well.
What is a rich result?
A rich result is your normal blue-link listing enhanced — star ratings, breadcrumbs, a video thumbnail, event dates. Rich results are schema-driven: valid structured data makes a page eligible, and Google decides whether to show it. This is the one you influence with markup.
What is an AI Overview?
An AI Overview is Google's AI-generated summary at the top of results, synthesized from several sources it cites. Like snippets, it reads your content — passage by passage — favoring direct answers, comparison tables, and named statistics from credible sources.
So what should you actually do?
- For featured snippets and AI Overviews — structure your content as questions with direct, self-contained answers. Same pattern wins both.
- For rich results — add valid, complete structured data (and keep it error-free).
- For all three — be a clear, trusted entity: consistent listings, real reviews, and a complete schema.org identity.
They aren't either/or. The same clean, well-structured, trustworthy site tends to win all three — which is exactly what hellojade builds for a home-services business.
